enoc7Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children (SRSG) 

Marta Santos Pais was appointed as Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children (SRSG) on 2009. As a high level global independent advocate, Marta Santos Pais promotes the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children in all settings. She acts as a bridge builder in all regions, and across sectors and settings where violence against children may occur. Santos Pais has more than 30 years experience on legal cooperation and human rights concern and an active participation in United Nations and intergovernmental processes. She was a member of the UN Drafting Group of the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child and of its Optional Protocols and participated in the development of other key international human rights standards, including on the abolition of the death penalty, protection from disappearances, human rights of juveniles deprived of liberty and human rights defenders. She has authored a large number of publications on international and comparative law and human rights and children’s rights. Before her appointment as SRSG on Violence against Children, Marta Santos Pais was the Director of the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre, and before then UNICEF Director of Evaluation, Policy and Planning. Previously, she was the Rapporteur of the Committee on the Rights of the Child and Vice-Chair of the Coordinating Committee on Childhood Policies of the Council of Europe.  She was a Special Adviser to the UN Study on Violence against Children and to the Machel Study on the Impact of Armed Conflict on Children.


enoc8Gehad Madi, current Member of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

Mr. Madi is a career diplomat and was Egypt's Ambassador to the UK and to the Republic of India. Prior to that, he served as Egypt's Deputy Head of Mission to the UK, Counsellor and Legal Advisor to Egypt's Mission to the UN in New York, during the drafting of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and Egypt's Embassy in Bonn. Mr. Madi was Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights, Humanitarian and Social Affairs and he also served as Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for International Legal Affairs. In both capacities, he participated in several sessions of the UN General Assembly, and the UN Commission on Human Rights.  He was also the Legal Advisor to the Egyptian Delegation to the 1997 Kyoto Conference on Global Climate Change, and Rapporteur of the UN Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations.

 

tuitMargaret Tuite, Commission coordinator for rights of the child

Margeret Tuite is the European Commission coordinator for rights of the child since 1 November 2011 in the unit responsible for fundamental rights and the rights of the child of DG Justice,
where the focus is on implementation of the EU Agenda for the rights of the child. Margaret and a small but dedicated team ensure proactive coordination within the Commission and also with stakeholders. Margaret has worked for the European Commission for 28 years, 14 of them in the justice and home affairs domains. In her previous post as deputy head of unit for criminal law, Margaret was responsible for European e-Justice, contributing to the improvement of access to justice and crossborder judicial cooperation.
